What are the most common illegal 10-Man Pitching issues?

  1. The ball is outside the wrist
  2. Humereus/torso angle is > 90 degrees
  3. The landing foot "crosses over"
  4. The Arm/elbow/wrist/ball angles away (side arm) from the body

10 Man - Is there a restriction on the distance of the ball from body?

There is no formal restriction on the distance that the ball can be from the body on release. However the other rules previously mentioned will often result in containing the distance. But there is an exception as shown below.

10 Man - Can the ball be above the shoulder?

Yes. If you bend over it is very easy for the ball to above the shoulder as shown in the images below. However, the humereus/torso angle cannot be > 90 degrees.

10 Man - Can I bring the ball behind the back on the back swing?

This is allowed as long as the other rules are followed. In the image that follows, note how both feet stay in contact with the rubber.

10 Man - Can I bring the ball inside the wrist in order to throw a riser?

This is allowed. Very difficult pitch to master. The ball is inside the wrist with a locked elbow on release as shown in the image that follows.

10 Man - Can the palm be facing the ground on release in order to throw a riser or change up?

Yes. This is allowed. Again, the ball is not outside the wrist and the elbow is locked as shown in the following images.

Do the Pitching Rules Change as you progress though the different classifications (D - Majors)?

 This is a common misconception.

I want to reinforce that the pitching rules DO NOT change as you move through the different classifications (D – Majors). (with one exception for 9-Man Majors - the crossover is allowed).

10 Man - Do the shoulders and hips have to be square at all times?

The only time the hips and shoulders MUST be square is on the release of the ball.
